Francisco López took his second stage win in three days at the 2013 Dakar. In the car category, Nasser Al-Attiyah won his 15th special at the Dakar, while the X-Raid team’s delight at seeing Stéphane Peterhansel seize the overall lead was tempered by the injuries and withdrawal of key driver Pole Krzysztof Hołowczyc. Soon / 2013 BMW R1200GS LC

Awesome Portland to Dakar motorcycle adventure

You have some new gear, and you want to promote it. How do you go about it? Well, if you’re Icon, this is how. The folks recently showed off their new Raiden all-weather motorcycling gear by pitting two riders against the fury of nature, which basically means storming (or crawling as the case may be) through all mad kinds of conditions and weather. And what’s the fun if you don’t document it? So here we have an epic 30-minute short called The Raiden Files that sees Ernie Vigil and The New Guy on a thrill ride from Portland, Oregon to Dakar, Senegal with a few stops along the way. Portland to Dakar by ICON / 2011 Triumph Tiger 800XC

The sun was pretty much past its prime as the motorcycles started the laborious climb out of the deep pit that almost seemed to extend down into the middle of the Earth. Nature had left its cruel patches on the the Tigers’ bearing surfaces, but they marched on, knowing that nirvana would only come upon hitting the distant checkpoint. This was an expedition of sorts, something that started weeks ago in the urban confines of Portland city limits had taken riders, bikes, and gear to the absolute limits of endurance and tolerance.
