Dakar 2013 / Barreda wins 10th stage


Joan Barreda won the tenth stage of the Dakar, from Cordoba-La Rioja with a special test of 357 km. With this, his fourth stage victory, the rider who hails from Castellon, Spain, becomes the most honoured rider so far in the competition. Barreda on his Husqvarna TE449RR by Speedbrain showed once again that not only did he have the speed but also the skill to dominate every type of terrain. Dakar Rally 2013 / Stage 3 & 4 / Pain in the Lead

Olivier Pain only started in 30th place, but by the time he got to Nazca, he had already left almost 20 other riders in the dust. Francisco López took his second stage win in three days at the 2013 Dakar. In the car category, Nasser Al-Attiyah won his 15th special at the Dakar, while the X-Raid team’s delight at seeing Stéphane Peterhansel seize the overall lead was tempered by the injuries and withdrawal of key driver Pole Krzysztof Hołowczyc. Today’s loop around Pisco saw Joan Barreda win the stage and the usual supporting cast of the Dakar step up to the plate and take the top honours, together with talented rookies like Matt Fish and Kurt Caselli. In the car category, Sainz and Al-Attiyah’s navigational problems were a blessing for the most experienced of the Dakar champions: Peterhansel, who took his 60th special, and Giniel de Villiers, who climbed to second in the general classification. Portland to Dakar by ICON / 2011 Triumph Tiger 800XC

The sun was pretty much past its prime as the motorcycles started the laborious climb out of the deep pit that almost seemed to extend down into the middle of the Earth. Nature had left its cruel patches on the the Tigers’ bearing surfaces, but they marched on, knowing that nirvana would only come upon hitting the distant checkpoint.
