We think Akira (1988) is right up there at the top, as not just one of the most awesome-st movies ever, but it featured one of the coolest bikes I can remember from my childhood. Sleek looks, laid-back riding style, sliding stops and what not! It’s so popular that numerous enthusiasts have made not just artwork and renderings, but real life-size replicas as well. Check out Masashi Teshima’s epic creation of Kaneda’s ride – he says it took him seven years and an estimated USD 121,000.
The iconic Japanese animated cyberpunk action film was directed by Katsuhiro Otomo, written by Otomo and Izo Hashimoto. The film depicts a dystopian version of the city of Tokyo in the year 2019, with cyberpunk tones. The plot focuses on teenage biker Tetsuo Shima and his psychic powers, and the leader of his biker gang, Shotaro Kaneda. The film became a hugely popular cult film and is widely considered to be a landmark in Japanese animation.
